Hi, its me, Emily at Crochet Aweigh! Today, June 28th, is National Mural Day so I figured I would share this Oh My Stars Top pattern with you for free to celebrate! This top is based off of a very special and spectacular local mural in Downtown Mount Dora, right up the road from our shop. The top is made-to-measure and comes in 3 styles: Crop top, peplum, or tunic style. The main technique used is the color pooling technique. Color pooling, also known as planned pooling, is a technique in knitting and crochet where. variegated or self-striping yarn in used to create intentional patterns by manipulating the color placement. I went the easier route for color pooling and used a simple stitch (a half double crochet) for the blue sections of the yarn, and then used a star stitch for the yellow and orange sections to create a “starry night” kind of look that reminded me of the mural.

Locally known as “the Van Gogh House”, this large home sits at the edge of downtown Mount Dora and overlooks the lake. Mount Dora is my hometown, and it is the most precious place full of historic architecture, arts & culture, and LOTS of good food! All exterior walls are painted in the Van Gogh style to look similar to his famous “Starry Night” masterpiece. This house caused quite a stir initially as the city was NOT happy with the paint job so close to the tourist-friendly downtown. The homeowners and the city ended up in court over it, but the homeowners won! The mural still stands today, and the city has since update their codes regarding exterior paint.

Naturally as I was looking for inspiration for exclusive yarns for the shop, this house was the top of my list. After sending some photos to one of our Florida yarn dyers Indigo Chile Dye Art Studio came up with the yarn version of this house, and she did an amazing job! She specializes in color pooling yarn. This yarn is totally exclusive to our shop, which means its the only yarn like it in the whole world and you can’t find it anywhere else! You can purchase it from our site here if you need some of this in your life!

Okay let’s get into the pattern! The pattern is written as made to measure so you will need to measure yourself or have the bust measurement of the person you want to make it for. If you would prefer the standard graded pattern, which includes instructions for sizes XS – 5X, you can purchase it from my site, Etsy, or Ravelry. Also included in the paid version are yardages for every size and style (crop, peplum, and tunic). Doing the color pooling technique with the star stitches can be a little tricky. I also include numerous photos of the best way to do the star stitches in the paid pattern.

Pattern Notes:

• This pattern is written made to measure, so as long as you have the bust measurement for yourself or whoever you want to make this top for, you can make it to fit.
• This design is made with 2″ of negative ease.
• The main section of the top is worked from the bottom up. The straps get added next, and finally the bottom ribbing.
• Do not turn after each row. Both the bodice and peplum are worked without turning. We do sl st to close each round.
• You can choose to make a crop top and end with the bottom ribbing, or go on to do the peplum edge and make the top as long as you’d like. I used an entire second skein and the leftover yarn from the crop top section for the peplum.
• The design uses the color pooling technique, so you may have to make adjustments with your tension to get the desired look.

Materials:

• 270-1604 yards of fingering weight color pooling yarn.
• For the Crop Top I used 1 skein of Indigo Child Dye Art Studios Color Pooling Yarn in the Van Gogh House colorway for the crop top. To make the peplum I used one additional skein. If you’d rather choose a different color you can find the others here.
• 72 – 172 yards of Cascade Yarns Heritage in the Marine colorway as contrast color
• US size F/3.75mm crochet hook
• Stitch Markers (4) – These are my current faves!
• Tapestry Needle
• Scissors

Abbreviations:

Gauge:

This pattern is made to measure, so gauge is not crucial. Mine came out to: 12 hdc + 3 star sts = 4″; 15 Rows = 4″

Special Stitches:

Part 1: The Bodice

Rnd 1: To begin take your bust measurement and subtract 2″. Fsc until you have that measurement. Being careful not to twist, sl st to first. I had 160 sts for my measurement.

*you will start rows 2 & 3 with either a hdc if you are on your main color, or with a BegSTR if you have reached your “pooling color”.

Rnd 2: Ch 1, hdc in same st as join, *hdc in each st across until your pooling color. STR until you reach your main color. Repeat from * around. Sl st to connect. Do not turn here or throughout.

NOTE: for my tension I had 3 star stitches. You may have 2 or 4 depending on your tension. As long as you can make it consistent, that’s all that matters!

Rnd 3: Ch 1, hdc across until pooling color, STR st until main color. Hdc across the STR sts like this: hdc in 1st ch, 2 hdc in “eye” of STR, 2 hdc in eye of next STR, 1 hdc in last ch, hdc in next hdc. See Photo below for clarification. If you have more or less star sts adjust accordingly.

Repeat row 3 until your desired length before the ribbing. Fasten Off and proceed to straps.

Part 2: Straps

Measure your top while flat. I had 17″ across. Divide your measurement by 2 to find the center. Mine was 8.5″. Divide it by 2 again and place a marker on either side, front and back. My measurement was 4.25″ shown in the photo above. If possible, try on your top to make sure that you like the placement. The markers are where your straps will connect on either side. Count the sts between markers and make sure they are the same. Measure from front marker to back marker while trying it on for strap length. 

Rnd 1: Sl st to first front marker. Ch length of your strap measurement. I used 55 ch’s. Sl st to your back marker.

Rnd 2: Ch 1, sl st to next st on bodice. Turn and work hdc’s and STR sts across your chains in the color pooling pattern and sl st to the st next to your front marker. Fasten off.

Repeat for your second strap.

Rnd 3: Locate the center of your back and attach with a sl st. Ch 1, continue in established pattern until your strap, continue up and around your strap working in the unused loops of the chain to the front, work across the front to your next strap, up and around your second strap, and across the back to your first st. Sl st to connect & fasten off.

Top Border:

Using Contrast Color, connect with a sl st to the center back. Ch 1 Sc around the back, the first strap, the front, second strap, and across the back to your first st. Sl st to connect. Fasten off.

Armhole Edges:

With Contrast Color, connect with a sl st at the center of the underarm, ch 1, sc around, sl st to connect. Fasten off.

Part 3: Bottom Ribbing

With Contrast Color, attach with a sl st to any st of the bottom edge. Ch 11.

Rnd 1: Sc BLO in the second ch from the hook and in each across. Sl st to next st on the bottom edge. Turn. 10 sc.

Rnd 2: Sc BLO in each st across. Turn.

Rnd 3: Ch 1, Sc BLO in each across, sl st in next 2 sts on bottom edge. Turn.

Rnd 4: Sc BLO in each st across. Turn.

Repeat rounds 1-4 all the way around the bottom edge. If you prefer a tighter fit then only repeat rows 3 & 4 around.

Seam the ribbing: Flip wrong side out. Sc through both the last row you completed and the first row of the ribbing. Flip right side out.

Border edge: Turn your work 90 degrees to work along the bottom edge ofthe ribbing. Place 1 sc in each row end. Sl st to first sc. Fasten off.

Weave in your ends & your crop top is done! If you want the peplum or tunic length then continue on.

Part 4: Peplum / Tunic

Rnd 1: With main color, attach with sl st to any sc on ribbing border. Ch 1,*2 hdc in each st until pooling color, STR with pooling color until main color. Repeat from * around. Sl st to first.

Rnd 2: Ch 1, 2 hdc in same, *1 hdc in next, 2 hdc in next until pooling color, STR with pooling color until main color. Repeat from * around. Sl st to first.

Rnd 3: Repeat round 2. If you want a fuller/more ruffle-y peplum then repeat round 2 until you are satisfied with the level of fullness.

Rnd 4: Ch 1, *Hdc in each until pooling color, STR in pooling color until main color. Repeat from * around. Sl st to first.

Repeat round 4 until desired length. Fasten off.

Final Row: Attach Contrast Color in any st. Ch 1, sc in each st around. Place 2 sc in each “eye” of STR sts. Sl st to connect. Fasten off.

Weave in all ends.
