This post is part of Fall for Crafting Event that is hosted by Yarn Crafts & Coffee! I am participating along with Eye Love Knots and T & C Crafters to bring you 7 days of Fall-themed ideas and patterns! Thanks for following along with us! For more info on this event, you can click the photo below to be directed to the Event’s main page and the other 6 days of crafty Fall ideas!

This Pattern is Day 6 of the event! Click the photo above to go to the event page and see all of the other fun ideas!

Now of course this pattern has a back story! And it’s a little (a lot) different than my usual Taylor Swift-inspired designs. I know this is a Fall-themed hop, but Halloween and Fall go together for me, so bear with me.

I bought these yarn beauties from Swan City Yarns at the Sunkissed Fiber Festival in January. They were different than colors I would usually reach for, but they went so well together, and screamed Autumn. But they sat on my shelf since January, but when I was thinking about this Blog Hop, I decided they needed to be used!

As I sat there trying to think of something to inspire me, I found myself thinking about that one Scooby Doo movie (call me nerd, whatever), the one that takes place in New England in Autumn called “Scooby Doo and the Witch’s Ghost”. I can’t tell you why these 3 colors brought up buried memories of this movie that I saw once or twice as a kid, but I decided to rewatch it while working on this project.

Then I realized why. The movie takes place in the little New England town of Oakhaven, and except for the colorful shots of the overall Autumn landscape, this movie has very limited colors. It is supposed to have an overall eerie & vintage vibe, even though it’s just Scooby Doo. Most of the movie is in more muted Fall colors just like the yarn I selected!

I won’t summarize the whole movie, but one of the main characters other than the gang is Ben Ravencroft. In their world he is a famous horror book writer. Velma is particularly a huge fan. His little hometown of Oakhaven is having a big Fall festival, but it is being haunted by a ghost of Ben Ravencroft’s ancestor who was a witch. Ben swears up and down that she was a healer, not a witch, and is on a mission to prove her innocent…or so it seems! So it was Ben Ravencroft who inspired the name for this crocheted witchy cape! Read on for this Autumn-y, Halloween-y cape pattern!

Gauge:

The Granny squares are 3.5″ on the diagonal

Pattern Notes:

  • This pattern is made to measure. It starts by measurings around your bust and arms
  • This is an intermediate pattern.
  • The pattern begins by making granny square and triangles, sewing them together, then working across the edge to work up towards your shoulders and neck. There are 2 rounds of border and the ties are worked into those.
  • Beginner chain 3 DOES count as a dc.
  • Granny squares are worked without turning. Most of the cape is done on the right side. Do not turn your work unless it states to.
  • You can make this in only one or 2 colors if you choose.

Special Stitch: Granny Decrease

Getting Started:

Measure around your arms and bust. See photo. I had 50″.

The granny squares are 3.5″ on the diagonal if you meet gauge.

Divide your measurement by 3.5″ and round down to a whole number. This is how many granny squares you need for the bottom of your cape. I need 14 granny squares. You can use less if you don’t want the cape to touch in the front. I chose to use 13 instead.

Here is an example so you can see how my math worked:

50″ around / 3.5″ = 14.2. Round down to 14 squares.

Granny Squares:

Complete the granny squares in whichever color combo you’d like. I did half of mine as (C2, MC, C3, MC) and the other half as (C3, MC, C2, MC). You always want the last round to be MC though.

With MC, Ch 4 and sl st to form ring.

Round 1: Ch 3 (counts as dc here and throughout), 2 dc into ring, ch 2, (3 dc into ring, ch 2) 3 times. Sl st to beg ch. Fasten off C2.

Round 2: Attach MC with a sl st to any corner space. Ch 3, (2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) into first ch2sp, *ch 1, sk 3 dc, (3dc, ch 2, 3dc) into next ch2sp. Repeat from * around. Ch 1, sl st to beg ch. Fasten off MC.

Round 3: Attach C3 with a sl st to any ch1sp. Ch 3, 2 dc into same sp. *ch 1, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) into corner, ch 1, 3 dc in next ch1sp. Repeat from * around. Ch 1, sl st to beg ch. Fasten off C3.

Round 4: Attach MC into any ch1sp before corner. Ch 3, 2 dc into same sp, ch 1, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) into corner, *ch 1, 3 dc into next ch1sp) twice, ch 1, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) into corner. Repeat from * around. Ch 1, 3 dc into next ch1sp, ch 1, sl st to beg ch. Fasten off & weave in ends.

Granny Triangles: Make 1 less than the number of Squares

Use only MC for the triangles.

With MC, Ch 4 and sl st to form ring.

Round 1: Ch 4 (counts as dc + ch1 here and throughout), 3dc into the ring, ch 2, 3dc into the ring, ch 1, dc into the ring. Turn.

Round 2: Ch 4, 3dc into 1st ch1sp, ch 1, (3dc, ch 2, 3dc) into ch2sp, ch 1, 3dc in last ch1sp, ch 1, dc in 3rd ch of begch4. Turn.

Round 3: Ch 4, 3dc in 1st ch1sp, ch 1, 3dc in next ch1sp, ch 1, (3dc, ch 2, 3dc) in next ch2sp, (ch 1, 3dc in next ch2sp) twice, ch 1, dc in 3rd ch of begch4. Turn.

Round 4: Ch 4, 3dc in 1st ch1sp, (ch 1, 3dc in next ch1sp) twice, ch 1, (3dc, ch 2, 3dc) into ch2sp, (ch 1, 3dc in next ch1sp) three times, ch 1, dc in 3rd ch of begch4. Fasten off.

Block squares & triangles if desired.

Seaming the Squares & Triangles:

Lay all your squares and triangles out the way that you want them to be, similar to the photo above.

Use your preferred method of joining to connect all the squares. I prefer to use my tapestry needle and whip stitch them together with the wrong sides facing. You can sc or sl st if you prefer.

Main Section:

With RS facing & MC, attach with sl st to corner space of 1st triangle.

Evenly space sc arouss the top edge of the triangles. Place 2 sc in each row end on the triangles, place 2 sc in each center ring of triangle, place 2 sc in corner space of each granny square. Do this across.

Count your stitches. You want a multiple of 3 plus 2 extra sts.

I had 235. 235 – the 2 extra sts = 233.

233 divided by 3 = 77.6. I need a whole number.

234 divided by 3 is 78. So I added an extra stitch at the end for a total of 236, meaning I had a multiple of 3 plus 2 extra stitches

Turn.

R2: Ch 3 (counts as a dc here and throughout), dc in same, sk 2, *3dc in next, sk 2. Repeat from * across to last. 2dc in last. Fasten off MC. Turn.

R3: With C2 and RS facing, Attach with sl st to 1st st. Ch 3, 3dc in each sp across. Dc in begch3. Fasten off C2. Do not turn.

R4: With MC and RS facing, attach with sl st to begch3 of previous row. Ch 3, dc in same, 3dc in each sp across. 2dc in last. Fasten off MC.

R5: With C3 and RS facing, attach with sl st to 1st st. Ch 3, 3dc in each sp across. Dc in begch3. Fasten off C3. Do not turn.

R6: With MC and RS facing, attach with sl st to begch3 of previous row. Ch 3, dc in same, 3dc in each sp across. 2dc in last. Fasten off MC.

R7-10: Repeat rows 3-6 once.

Start Decreasing

R11: With C2 and RS facing, attach with Sl st to begch3. Ch 3, sk to first, space, 3dc in 1st sp, (create a granny decrease over next 2 sps, 3dc in next 15 sps). Repeat () across until last 3 sps. Your numbers may not be even here, that’s okay. Create granny decrease over next 2 sps, 3dc in last sp, dc in last st. Fasten off C2, do not turn.

R12: With MC and RS facing, attach with sl st to begch3. Ch 3, dc in same, 3dc in each sp across. Fasten off MC, do not turn.

R13: With C3 and RS facing, attach with sl st to to begch3. Ch 3, 3dc in first sp, (create a granny decrease over next 2 sps, 3dc in next 8 sps). Repeat () across until last 3. Granny decrease over next 2 sps, 3dc in last sp, dc in last st. Fasten off.

R14: Repeat R12.

R15-16: Repeat rows 3-4.

R17: With C3 and RS facing, attach with sl st to begch3. Ch 3, 3dc in first sp, (create a granny decrease over next 2 sps, 3dc in next 10 sps). Repeat () across until last 3. Granny decrease over next 2 sps, 3dc in last sp, dc in last st. Fasten off.

R18: Repeat R12

R19-22: Repeat rows 3-6

R23: With C2 and RS facing, attach with sl st to begch3. Ch 3, 3dc in 1st sp, (create a granny decrease over next 2 sps, 3dc in next 6 sps). Repeat () across until last 3 sps. Granny decrease over next 2 sps, 3dc in last sp, dc in last st. Fasten off

R24-28: Repeat in color sequence without decreasing.

R29: With whichever color is next in your sequence and RS facing, attach with sl st to begch3. Ch 3, 3dc in next sp, Granny decrease over next 2 sps, (3dc in next 6 sps, granny decrease over next 2 sps). Repeat from () across. Fasten off.

R30: With the next color and RS facing, Attach to begch3. Ch 3, dc in same, 3dc in each sp across, 2dc in last st. Fasten off.

R31: Ch 3, 3dc in 1st sp, granny decrease over next 2, (3dc in next 4 sps, granny decrease over next 2 sps). Repeat () until last 3 sps, granny decrease over next 2, 3dc in last sp, dc in last. Fasten off.

R32: Attach next color to begch3. Ch 3, dc in same, 3dc in each sp across. 2dc in last. Fasten off.

R33: Attach next color to begch3. Ch 3, 3dc in 1st sp, granny decrease over next 2 sps, (3dc in next 3 sps, granny decrease over next 2 sps). Repeat () across until last 3 sps. Fasten off & weave in ends.

The Border:

R1: With RS facing attach MC with a sc to the left front edge. See Photo. Now working down the left front edge, place 2 sc in each dc row end. 1 sc in end of sc row.

Place 1 sc in each st (including ch1sps) of the granny square until bottom point, 3sc in bottom point, continue along other side of the square with 1sc in each st until the join, sc3tog over ch1sp of current square, joining sp, and ch1sp of next square – see photo,

*Place 1 sc in each st along square, 3sc in bottom point, sc in each along next edge, sc3tog. over ch1sp of current square, joining sp, and ch1sp of next square. Repeat from * across bottom edge of cape.

After the last sc3tog, sc in each st of the square until the last bottom point, 3sc in point, sc in each st until you reach the dc rows.

2 sc in each dc row end up the right side. Place 2 additional sc in the last row edge so you can turn and go across the top edge.

Sc in each st across the top. Place 2 extra sc in the last st, sl st to 1st. End of Row 1.

R2: ch 61, sc in 2nd ch from the hook and in each across.

Continue along the left front edge, around the bottom, and up the right side: sc in each st around until top of right edge.

At the top right edge, ch 61. Sc in 2nd ch from the hook and in each across.

Sc in each sc across the top edge, sl st to 1st ch of first strap.

Fasten off & weave in ends. Block if desired. Enjoy your new cape!

I love a good crocheted accessory that’s lightweight enough for the Florida fall heat, yet versatile enough to keep you cozy when the weather gets a little chillier—wherever you are!
