Free Crochet Pattern: The Celeste Vest

Below you will find the free pattern for the Celeste Vest!

Hi, its me, Emily at Crochet Aweigh! August 15th is celebrated as National Granny Square Day! As far as I know, this is the only crochet-specific day all year! There are other national days like I Love Yarn Day in October, Local Yarn Shop Day in April, and November is national make a sweater in a month, but all those could apply to any fiber craft, so Granny Square Day is special!

However, I always have to change things up! The Celeste vest features a sunburst granny square instead of the traditional square. I chose Sugar Cane from Circulo Yarns because it is made with viscose, a plant based fiber, which is so soft to work with! It also provides an amazing drape for your finished garment. Sugar Cane is a sustainable option, good for the environment, is biodegradable, and recyclable!

Pattern Notes:

• Sizes are written as follows: XS, (S, M, L, XL, 2XL, 3XL, 4XL, 5XL).
• This pattern is advanced beginner level.
• Vest begins by making the sunburst granny squares, connecting them and then working up for the bodice, then splitting for front and back panels. Edging is added last.
• Vest is designed with 1-4″ of positive ease depending on your size.

Sizes & Measurements:

Materials:

• 409 – 1097 yards of a DK weight Viscose yarn. I used Sugar Cane by Circulo Yarns in the color Almond.
• US Size H8/5.00mm Crochet Hook
• Tapestry Needle
• Scissors

Abbreviations:

Special Stitches:

Triple V Stitch: (Tr, ch 2, Tr) into the indicated ch or space.

Puff Stitch: YO, (insert hook into indicated st, pull up a loop, YO) 3 times. You should have 8 loops on your hook. Pull through all but the last loop on the hook, YO, pull through last 2.

Beginning Double Crochet 4 Together: Ch 2, YO, (insert hook into st, pull up a loop, YO, pull through 2 loops, YO) 3 times, there will be 4 loops on your hook. YO, pull through all 4 loops.

Double Crochet 4 Together: YO, (insert hook into st, pull up a loop, YO, pull through 2 loops on hook, YO) 4 times, there will be 6 loops on your hook. take the last loop and pull through all.

Gauge:

Gauge is 5 TrVst x 4 rows = 4″ Blocked.

To make swatch: Ch 18. TrVst in 6th ch from the hook, (sk 2, TrVst in next) 4 times. Turn. Complete Rows 2-3 of bodice. Complete row 2 once more. Wet Block.

Sunburst Granny Squares measure 5″ x 5″ after round 5 unblocked.

Pattern – Begin with Sunburst Granny Squares

In order to get the measurements right, most sizes need a extra row or 2 to get the right size across.

XS: Make 6

S: Make 6 with 1 extra row

M: Make 7 with 1 extra row

L: Make 8

XL: Make 8 with 1 extra row

2XL: Make 9 with 2 extra rows

3XL: Make 10 with 1 extra row

4XL: Make 10 with 2 extra rows

5XL: Make 12 with 1 extra row

To begin: Chain 5, Sl st to form ring

Round 1: Ch 3 (counts as dc here and throughout), 15 dc into ring. Sl st to ch 3. 16 Dc

Rnd 2: Sl st between Ch 3 & 1st Dc, Ch 2, (Pf st, ch 1) in between each of the dcs around. Sl st to 1st puff. 16 Pf sts, 16 ch1sps.

Rnd 3: Sl st into ch1sp, Begdc4tog into same sp, Ch 2, (Dc4tog, ch 2) into each ch1sp around. Sl st to Begdc4tog.

Rnd 4: Sl st into ch2sp, Ch 3, (2dc, ch 2, 3dc) into same sp. *(sk dc4tog, 3 dc in next ch2sp) 3 times, (3dc, ch 2, 3dc) into next ch2sp. Repeat from * 3 times. (sk dc4tog, 3 dc in next ch2sp) 3 times. Sl st to begch3. 15 sts per side, 60 sts + 4 ch2sps total.

Rnd 5: Ch 1, sc in 1st 3 sts, *(sc, ch 2, sc) into ch2sp, sc in next 16 sts. Repeat from * around. Sl st to 1st sc. 17 sc per side.

“Extra” Row: “Extra Row”: Do however many your size indicates. Ch 1, *sc in each st to corner, (sc, ch 2, sc) in corner sp. Repeat from * around.

Example: Small is going to make 6 sunburst granny squares with rows 1 – 5, and row 6 as the 1 extra row needed.

Connecting the Squares:

Connect the squares in a long strip using whichever seaming method you prefer. I chose to sc mine.

Next:

With RS facing, attach with a sl st to the top right corner of your squares.

Ch 1, evenly place 104, (116, 134, 137, 152, 188, 191, 212, 227) sc across. Turn.

Next Row: Ch 1, sc in each sc across. Turn. Move onto bodice.

Bodice:

Row 1: Ch 4 (counts as Tr here and throughout), Sk 1, *TrVst in next, sk 2. Repeat from * across to the last 3 sts. TrVst in 3rd to last st, sk 1, Tr in last. Turn. 33 (37, 43, 44, 49, 61, 62, 69, 74) TrVsts and 2 Tr.

Row 2: Ch 6 (counts as a Tr ch 2 here and throughout), Tr into same. *Sk next TrVst, TrVst into the space between V sts. Repeat from * across until the last. Sk last TrVst, TrVst in top of begch. Turn.

Row 3: Ch 4 (counts as a Tr here and throughout), *Sk next TrVst, TrVst between next V sts. Repeat from * across. Tr in the 4^th ch of begch6. Turn.

Next: Repeat rows 2-3 once,(once, twice, twice, 3 times, 3 times, 3 times, 4 times, 4 times). Turn. Do NOT fasten off.

Separating for front & back panels:

On both ends, count in 6, (7, 9, 8, 9, 12, 11, 13, 14) TrVsts and place marker. Sk 2, (2, 2, 3, 3, 3, 4, 4, 4) TrVsts, place another marker. 4 markers total.

Left Front Panel:

Row 1: Ch 6, Tr in same, *Sk next TrVst, TrVst between next. Repeat from * to the marker. Sk marked TrVst, Tr between next Vsts. Turn.

Row 2: Ch 6, Tr in same, *sk next TrVst, TrVst between next Vsts. Repeat from * across. Tr in 4th ch of begch6. Turn.

Rows 3 – 6, (6, 7, 7, 8, 8, 9, 9, 10): Repeat row 2.

Last Row: Ch 1, sc in each st (including chains) across. End with sc in 4th ch of begch6. Fasten off.

Right Front Panel:

Row 1: With WS facing, attach with sl st to space before marker. Ch 4 (counts as Tr), sk marked Vst, *TrVst between next Vsts, sk next TrVst. Repeat from * across. End with TrVst in begch4. Turn.

Row 2: Ch 4, *sk next TrVst, TrVst between next Vsts. Repeat from * across. TrVst in begch4. Turn.

Rows 3 – 6, (6, 7, 7, 8, 8, 9, 9, 10): Repeat row 2.

Last Row: Ch 1, sc in each st (including chains) across. End with sc in 4th ch of begch6. Fasten off.

Back Panel:

Back Panel:

With WS facing, attach with sl st to the space to the right of the back marker.

Row 1: Ch 4, *sk TrVst, TrVst between Vsts. Repeat from * across. TrVst in top of begch4. Turn.

Rows 2 – 6, (6, 7, 7, 8, 8, 9, 9, 10): Repeat row 1.

Row 9: Ch 1, sc in each st (including chains) across. End with Sc in begch. Fasten off.

Turn your work wrong side out and seam the shoulders with whip stitch, sl st, or sc method.

Armhole Edges:

With RS facing, attach at underarm with a sl st.

Row 1: Ch 1, sc along the armhole edge, placing 1 sc in each st at underarm, and 3 sc in each Tr row end around. Sl st to 1^st sc. Fasten off.

You may add more rows here if you’d like!

Final Edging:

With RS facing, attach with sl st to the bottom left corner.

Row 1: Ch 1, sc in each st up the collar edge and around. Place 3 sc in the bottom right corner and turn 90 degrees to sc across the bottom of your squares. Sl st to 1^st sc. Turn.

Row 2: Repeat row 1.

Row 3: Ch 1, sc in each st across the bottom edge only. Turn.

Row 4: Ch 1, sc in each st across. Fasten off.

Weave in all ends & Wet Block. Your vest is done!
