Hi, its me, Emily at Crochet Aweigh! The next addition to “the 1” collection is the Sunday Matinee Shawl! This shawl is lacy enough that it isn’t too hot to wear during the Summer on those afternoons when you want an extra layer. I picture heading to one of the local theaters, Bay Street Players or the Ice House, for an afternoon showing of a play, and throwing this shawl on to keep warm in the air conditioned theater. Us Florida girls can only handle so much AC!
This deep, dark blue was calling to me, daring me to turn it into a shawl! This is Rios by Malabrigo Yarns. The color is Matisse Blue. Rios is a worsted weight, 100% superwash merino wool. It is incredibly soft and feels luxurious. It made for a really wonderful shawl, and I can’t wait to try it out on other projects!

Pattern Notes:
- Finished & blocked the shawl is approximately 19″w x 100″long before fringe.
- This pattern is considered beginner level.
- This pattern is written as one size.
- Beginning chain 2 does NOT count as a DC.
Materials:
- 630 yards of worsted weight (4) yarn. I used 3 skeins of Malabrigo Rios.
- US Size H8/5.00mm Crochet Hook
- Tapestry Needle
- Scissors

Abbreviations:
Ch – Chain
Chsp – Chain space
Fdc – Foundation Double Crochet
Sc – Single crochet
Dc – Double crochet
St(s) – Stitch(es)
Sk – Skip
RS – Right Side
WS – Wrong side
Gauge:
Gauge is 16 dc x 7 rows in the pattern = 4″ x 4″ BLOCKED as below. Gauge is important to make sure you have enough yarn. I used exactly 3 skeins of Malabrigo Rios, it was a close call!
To make the swatch:
Row 1: Fdc 18. Turn
Row 2: Ch 1, sc in 1st st, *Ch 5, sk 4, sc between next 2 dcs. Repeat across to last 5 sts. Ch 5, sk 4, sc in last st. Turn.
Row 3: Ch 2, dc in 1st st, ch 3, sc in 1st chsp, *ch 5, sc in next chsp. Repeat from * across. Ch 3, dc in last sc. Turn.
Row 4: Ch 1, sc in dc, ch 5, sk ch3sp, *sc in next ch5sp, ch 5. Repeat across. Sc in last ch5sp, ch 5, sk ch3sp, sc in last dc. Turn.
Row 5: Ch 2, dc in 1st sc, 4dc in each ch5sp across. Dc in last st. Turn.
Row 6-7: Repeat rows 2 & 3. Wet Block then measure.
Pattern Instructions:
Row 1: Fdc 66. Turn.
Row 2: Ch 1, sc in 1st st, *Ch 5, sk 4, sc between next 2 dcs. Repeat across to last 5 sts. Ch 5, sk 4, sc in last st. Turn.
Row 3: Ch 2, dc in 1st st, ch 3, sc in 1st chsp, *ch 5, sc in next chsp. Repeat from * across. Ch 3, dc in last sc. Turn.
Row 4: Ch 1, sc in dc, ch 5, sk ch3sp, *sc in next ch5sp, ch 5. Repeat across. Sc in last ch5sp, ch 5, sk ch3sp, sc in last dc. Turn.
Row 5: Ch 2, dc in 1st sc, 4dc in each ch5sp across. Dc in last st. Turn.
Rows 6 – 141: Repeat rows 2-5. Make sure to end with row 5. Fasten off & weave in ends.
Wet Block.
Adding Fringe (Optional):
I cut pieces 10.5″ long and did 22 tassels per side. I used 3 strands per tassel.
With RS facing, placed the first one in between 1st 2 dc posts, then skipped 3 posts and placed another one. This was 22 tassels per side using this spacing. You are welcome to add more, or make them using 4 strands if you prefer.
Weave in all ends & Wet Block. Your Shawl is done!
