Hi, its me, Emily at Crochet Aweigh! The next addition to the “I Think He Knows” collection is the Follow the Sparks Scarf! As most gals do during this time of year, I have been looking forward to Fall, and even though this scarf is pink to match the theme of the collection, it feel like my new favorite scarf for Autumn! I was a little skeptical of adding ruffles to all edges of a scarf, but I LOVE it! It elevates it in such a fun and girly way! It is an oversized scarf so it can be worn like a scarf or a shawl.
This yarn is Worsted from Malabrigo, which is a heavy worsted weight that is single ply. Single ply means it is only one strand of fiber with a twist. That means no splitting the yarn! I love the texture that this yarn has to it, and I’ve got more designs planned with it!

Pattern Notes:
- This pattern is beginner friendly, considered easy level.
- 5dc in 1 stitch is referred to as a “shell” throughout the whole pattern.
- 3dc in 1 stitch is referred to as a “half shell” throughout.
- Blocking is optional. Measurements and gauge are all listed as unblocked.
Materials:
- 990 yards of worsted (4) weight. Sample used 4.7 skeins of Malabrio Worsted in Cactus Flower
- US size J/6.00 mm crochet hook
- Tapestry Needle
- Scissors

Abbreviations:
Ch – Chain
Chsp – Chain space
Fsc – Foundation Single Crochet
Sc – Single crochet
Dc – Double crochet
St(s) – Stitch(es)
Sk – Skip
Shell – 5 dc in 1 stitch
Measurements:
- This pattern is written for 1 size.
- Finished measurements as written are approximately 12″w x 85″long
Gauge:
Gauge is not crucial, but it is 3 shells x 7 rows = 4″ x 4″ as below.
To make Swatch:
Row 1: Fsc 13.
Row 2: Ch 1, sc in 1st st, *sk 1, 5dc in next, sk 1, sc in next. Repeat from * across.
Row 3: Ch 3 (counts as a dc here and throughout), 2dc in 1st sc, *sk 2, sc in 3rd dc of shell, sk 2, 5dc in next sc. Repeat from * across. End with 3dc in last sc instead of 5dc.
Repeat 2-3 until you have 7 rows.
Pattern Instructions:
Row 1: Fsc 25. Turn.
Row 2: Ch 1, sc in 1st st, sk 1, 5dc in next, sk 1, sc in next. Repeat from * across. Turn. 6 shells & 7 sc.
Row 3: Ch 3 (counts as a dc here and throughout), 2dc in 1st sc, *sk 2, sc in 3rd dc of shell, sk 2, 5dc in next sc. Repeat from * across. End with 3dc in last sc instead of 5dc. Turn. 5 shells & 2 half shells.
Row 4: Ch 1, sc in 1st, *sk 2, 5dc in sc, sk 2, sc in 3rd dc of shell. Repeat from * across. Turn. 6 shells & 7 sc.
Repeat rows 3-4 until 131 total rows or until desired length. Do not fasten off.
Ruffle:
Row 1: Turn your work 90 degrees to crochet along the outer edge. Ch 1 and place 1 sc in each sc row end, and 2 sc in each dc row end until you reach the 1st corner. Place 3 sc in the corner, mark the middle sc of the corner, and 1 sc in each foundation st across the short end. Place 3 sc in the next corner, mark the middle sc of the corner, and continue on down the long edge with 1 sc in each sc row end, and 2 sc in each dc row end. Place 3 sc in the next corner, mark the middle sc, and 1 sc in each st across. Place 3 sc in the last corner and sl st to 1st sc. Mark the middle sc of the corner.
Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as first dc), 1 dc in same st, *2dc in each st across to corner, 3 dc in marked corner st, move marker to middle dc of corner. Repeat from * around. Dc in last st & sl st to begch3.
Row 3: Ch 3, dc in same, *(1 dc in next, 2 dc in next) across until corner. 3 dc in marked corner st. Repeat from * around to after the last corner. (1 dc in next, 2 dc in next) until last st. Sl st to begch3.
Fasten off & weave in ends. Enjoy your new scarf!
