I’m taking a (very short) break from garment designs to bring you these adorable Blueberry Kitchen Scrubbies! Sometimes you’re just in the mood for a really quick crochet project, or maybe you are doing some Spring and Summer markets with your handmade items. These scrubbies sell really well at the different events that I’ve done. They also make great gifts! Whatever your reason, this Blueberry Kitchen Scrubby is just the thing you need!

For the first 10 days of June, we’re thrilled to be bringing you 10 Summer fruit themed craft ideas featuring fruit themed crochet patterns and a plastic canvas fruit pattern. This Fun & Fruity Crafting Event kicks off on June 1st and will run through June 10th – 10 days in total.

I’m teaming up with my friends Alexandra of EyeLoveKnots blog and Yarn Crafts & Coffee, and Candace of T&C Crafters for this event. Each day, there will be a different featured craft pattern, and it will either be available on one of their blogs or mine.

Pattern Notes:

• This pattern is considered easy level.
• Ch 3 does count as a stitch.
• Scrubby is worked without turning.
• Scrubby is constructed by making 2 circles, a stem, and leaves.
• Circles are then whip stitched together with the leaves and stem stuffed between the 2 circles.
• The Scrubby is about 3.5″ across when completed. Gauge is not important here.

Materials:

I’ve tried many different “scrubby” yarns, but I really like Yarn Bee Scrub-Ology Scrub It Yarn from Hobby Lobby for kitchen scrubbies. The yarn is labeled as a chunky #5 weight, but it is definitely more like a bulky #6. This one is very dense, making it great for those tough messes in the kitchen. Another great choice would be Lion Brand Stitch Soak Scrub, but this yarn is quite a bit thinner than the Yarn Bee Scrub-Ology. If you chose the Lion Brand I would recommend holding a 100% cotton worsted #4 weight yarn along with it. This will give you a much softer kitchen scrubby, but it will still do the trick! For 100% cotton worsted weight yarns I used I Love This Cotton from Hobby Lobby, but some other excellent choices include Circulo Cotton Max Color 4/6, or Nifty Cotton from Cascade Yarns. Below is the exact material list for the sample scrubbies shown.

• Hobby Lobby Scrub-ology Scrub It! in True Blue. 1 skein makes 6 scrubbies, so about 20 yards per scrubby.
• A small amount of green and brown cotton yarn. Sample used Hobby Lobby I Love This Cotton in colors Bright Citrus and Brown
• US size L/8.00 mm Crochet Hook
• US size G/4.00 mm crochet hook
• Plastic Yarn Needle
• Scissors

Abbreviations:

Blueberry: Make 2

With L hook and Scrubby yarn: Ch 4, Sl st to form ring, or use magic ring.

R1: Ch 3 (counts as dc here and throughout), place 11dc into the ring, sl st to begch.

R2: Ch 3, dc in same, 2dc in each st around. Sl st to begch. Fasten off.

Make a 2nd “blueberry” and leave a long tail for sewing when you fasten off.

Stem:

With G hook and brown, Ch 6

Hdc in 2nd ch from the hook and in each across. Fasten off.

Leaves:

With G hook and citrus, Ch 12

Sc in 2nd ch from the hook, hdc in next, dc in next, hdc in next, sc in next, sl st in next, sc in next, hdc in next, dc in next, hdc in next, sc in last. Fasten off & weave in ends.

Assembly

Lay the blueberries with wrong sides together, tuck in all ends.

Use a tapestry needle and the long blueberry tail to whip stitch through both blueberries. until there are only a few sts left.

Stuff the leaves and stem into the remaining space. I like to stuff all my ends (except for the one I’m using) inside the scrubby during this step.

Stitch through blueberries, leaves, and stems, making sure to catch a few stitches of each part. Adjust placement if needed.

Once done, tie a knot and pull your tail through the blueberry. Snip off the extra. All Done!
