What Materials do You need to crochet an Apple Orchard Bucket Hat?

• Worsted #4 Weight 100% Cotton Yarn like Cascade Yarn Nifty Cotton or Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton
• Sample used Nifty Cotton – 175 yards of White, 46 yards of Red, 40 yards of green, and  very small amount of brown scrap yarn.
• Stitch marker – I like these cute ones!
• G/4.00mm Crochet Hook or whichever size meets gauge
• Tapestry Needle for weaving in ends

Abbreviations:

• Ch – Chain
• Sl St – Slip Stitch
• Sc – Single Crochet
• Hdc – Half Double Crochet
• Dc – Double Crochet
• BLO – Back Loop Only
• Sk – skip
• Sts – Stitches
• Rsc – Reverse Single Crochet or Crab Stitch

Gauge:

After completing 7 rows of the top of the hat, your circle should measure approximately 4″ across. If it does not then adjust your hook size accordingly.

Pattern Notes:

• The hat is constructed of 3 parts: The round top, the band, and the brim.
• The top is worked in continuous rounds without joining. Use a stitch marker at the beginning of each round to keep your place.
• The band is made of 6 square motifs. The motifs get stitched together to form the band.
• The brim is done in single crochet with some increases, and finished off with one row of reverse single crochet.
• The hat is sized for adults.

Pattern Instructions: Start with the Top

With White, ch 4, sl st to form ring.

Round 1: Ch 1, 10 sc into ring. Do not join here or throughout the top.

Round 2: 2 sc in BLO in each st around. 20 sts.

Round 3: BLO. (2 sc in next, 1 sc in next) around. 30 sts.

Round 4: BLO. (2 sc in next, 1 sc in each of next 2) around. 40 sts.

Round 5: BLO. (2 sc in next, 1 sc in each of next 3) around. 50 sts.

Round 6: BLO. (2 sc in next, 1 sc in each of next 4) around. 60 sts.

Round 7: BLO. (2 sc in next, 1 sc in each of next 5) around. 70 sts. Check Gauge here!

Round 8: BLO. (2 sc in next, 1 sc in each of next 6) around. 80 sts.

Round 9: BLO. (2 sc in next, 1 sc in each of next 7) around. 90 sts.

Round 10: BLO. (2 sc in next, 1 sc in each of next 8) around. 100 sts.

Round 11: BLO. (2 sc in next, 1 sc in each of next 9) around. 110 sts.

Round 12: BLO. (2 sc in next, 1 sc in each of next 10) around. 120 sts.

Round 13: BLO. (2 sc in next, 1 sc in each of next 11) around. 130 sts. Your circle should be about 7″ across here.

Rounds 14 – 16: BLO. Sc in each st around. Fasten off & leave a long tail for sewing.

Apple Motifs: Make 6

With Red or Green, ch 4, sl st to form ring

Round 1: Ch 3 (counts as Dc here and throughout), 11 Dc into ring, sl st to connect. 12 sts.

Round 2: Ch 3, 1 Dc into same st, 2 Dc into each st around, sl st to connect. 24 sts.

Round 3: Ch 1, sc in same st, (3dc in next, dc in next 7, 3dc in next, sc in next), sl st in next, sc in next.  Repeat inside () once.  Sl st to last st and sl st to first sc.  Fasten off color.

Round 4: BLO. With White, attach to 3rd st (the middle dc of first apple “corner”) of round 2. (Sc, ch 2, sc) in same st, (2sc in next, sc in next 2) 3 times, ch 2, sc in same st, (2sc in next, sc in next) 3 times, 2sc in next, (sc, ch 2, sc) in next, sc in next, (2sc in next, sc in next 2) twice, 2sc in next, (sc, ch 2, sc) in next, 2sc in next 2 sts, 3sc in sl st from round 3, 2sc in last 2 sc.  Sl st to 1st sc.  4 ch2 corner spaces, 13 sc per side.

Round 5: Sl into corner space.  Ch 1 (doesn’t count as st), *(2hdc, ch 2, 2hdc) into corner space, hdc in next 13 sts.  Repeat from * around.  Sl st to 1st st.  Fasten off. 4 ch2 corner spaces, 17 hdc per side.  Your square should measure about 4″ across.

Stem:

Locate the front loop of your most center stitch on round 3 of the apple and insert your hook.

Create a slip knot and place it on your hook and pull it through that front loop.

Chain 3, sc in 2nd ch from the hook and in last ch.  Fasten off.

Pull your tails through to the back side and tie a knot to secure.  You can use the tails to tack down the top of the stem if needed.  Fasten off tails.

Connecting the Motifs:

Sew the squares together in your desired method. I prefer to use a tapestry needle and whip stitch them all edges together, but you could also sl st them, or sc them together. Whatever you are more comfortable with.

Top Border Round:

With RS facing, attach with a sc to any stitch at the top edge of your apple motifs.  Place 1 sc in each st and 1 sc in each corner space around.  Sl st to 1st and fasten off.  This will make the next step easier.

Sew the band to the top:

Flip your apple band inside out. Each ch 2 corner spaces on the motifs count as 2 sts. The band has 114 sts around and the top has 130 sts around. Use the tapestry needle to sew the top to the band. Evenly space 16 decreases around to account for the difference in sts.  This is approximately every 8th stitch on the top.  Flip rightside out when done.

The Brim:

Round 1: With White, attach in any ch 2 corner space on any motif. (2 sc in corner, sk seam, 2 sc in next corner, sc in each st until next corner) around. Sl st to 1st and change to red. Do not fasten off White. 126 sc.

Round 2: With Red: ch 1, (sc in 8 sts, 2 sc in next) around. Sl st to connect and change back to white. Fasten off Red. 139 sc.

Round 3: With White: ch 1, sc in each st around. Sl st to connect and switch to green. Do not fasten off White.

Round 4: with green, Ch 1, (sc in 8 sts, 2 sc in next) around. Sc in last 3, sl st to 1^st and change back to white. Fasten off green. 154 sc.

Round 5: with white, Ch 1, sc in each st around. Sl st to 1^st and switch to red. Do not fasten off White.

Round 6: with Red, ch 1, sc in each st around.  Sl st to connect and change to white. Fasten off red.

Round 7: with White, rsc around. Sl st to 1^st. Faten off & weave in ends.
