a Rafflecopter giveaway

As part of the Hats off to Summer Blog Hop one lucky winner will get $30 to spend on yarn, notions and/or boutique items from the Yarn Crafts & Coffee Shop! The yarn shown in the photo is Berroco Seaspun.

I am running this giveaway together with Cre8tion Crochet, T & C Crafters, and Yarn Crafts & Coffee. It will appear on each of our blogs, but there will be only 1 winner.

Special Note: Yarn Crafts & Coffee has two cats. They do not mingle with the yarn, but you may find cat hairs on the yarn you receive – it’s hard to avoid.

International Makers: If you are outside the US, you can still enter to win. A digital prize may be supplemented for the yarn depending on shipping rate and duties.

I included several ways to enter (through the Rafflecopter below). To be entered in the giveaway, you only need to complete one task, but the more you do, the better your chances. Some of them you can come back and do again once a day! Last time to enter will be Sunday 06/30/24 at 11:59pm EST.

*The Rafflecopter works. I receive a lot of messages each time I run a giveaway stating it’s not working. If you can’t see it, please check your browser in case you have any apps/settings that may prevent it from showing, or try clearing your cache. Entering via the Rafflecopter is the only way to gain entries.

Materials

  • Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton: 1 skein of white, 1 skein of tangerine, 1 skein of goldenrod, 1 skein of grass. You can also use scrap yarn. I used about 180 yards of white, about 45 yards of tangerine, 45 yards of goldenrod, and 35 yards of grass.
  • Size G/4.00mm Crochet Hook
  • Scissors
  • Tapestry needle
  • Stitch marker – I like these cute ones!

Gauge

After completing 7 rows of the top of the hat, your circle should measure approximately 3.75″ across. If it does not then adjust your hook size accordingly.

Abbreviations

  • CH – Chain
  • Sl St – Slip Stitch
  • Sc – Single Crochet
  • Hdc – Half Double Crochet
  • Dc – Double Crochet
  • Tr – Treble Crochet
  • BLO – Back Loop Only
  • Sk – skip
  • Sts – Stitches
  • Ls – Leaf Stitch
  • Rsc – Reverse Single Crochet or Crab Stitch

Special Stitches

The Leaf Stitch : Attach with a sl st where indicated. Ch 5, sl st in 2nd ch from the hook, hdc in next, dc in next, (hdc, sl st) in last ch, sl st to original stitch.

Pattern Notes:

  • The hat is constructed of 3 parts: The round top, the band, and the brim.
  • The top is worked in continuous rounds without joining. Use a stitch marker at the beginning of each round to keep your place.
  • The band is made of 6 square motifs, 3 lemons, and 3 oranges. The motifs get stitched together to form the band.
  • The brim is done in single crochet with some increases, and finished off with one row of reverse single crochet.
  • The hat is sized for adults.
  • I recommend crocheting over as many ends as possible to avoid weaving in as many once the hat is completed.

Leaves

Leaves for the Orange: locate the top middle stitch of round 3. The fronts loops should be accessible. With Grass, attach with a sl st to the top stitch of round 3 of the orange motif. Ch 5, sl st in 2nd ch from the hook, hdc in next, dc in next, hdc and sl st in next. sl st to original front loop of round 3. Repeat again for 2nd leaf in same st. Fasten off, but leave a tail.

Leaves for the Lemon: locate the front loop of the corner chain on round 3. With Grass, attach with a sl st to the front loop of the corner chain. Ch 5, sl st in 2nd ch from the hook, hdc in next, dc in next, hdc and sl st in next. sl st to original front loop of round 3. Repeat again for 2nd leaf in same st. Fasten off, but leave a tail

Sew down the Leaves

Using the tail from fastening off, tack the leaves down however you prefer. I used the plastic tapestry needle and sewed the lemon leaves around the corner of the lemon. For the oranges I waited until after I had connected the top section to take the leaves down in a more upright look.

Connecting the Motifs

Sew the squares together in your desired method. I prefer to sc all edges together, but you could also sl st them, or use the tapestry needle to whipstitch them together. Whatever you are more comfortable with.

Sew the top to the band

Each ch 2 corner spaces on the motifs count as 2 sts. The band has 114 sts around and the top has 130 sts around. Use the tapestry needle to sew the top to the band. Evenly space 16 decreases around to account for the difference in sts.

The Brim

Round 1: With White, attach in any ch 2 corner space on any motif. (2 sc in corner, sk seam, 2 sc in next corner, sc in each st until next corner) around. 114 sts.

Round 2: ch 1, (sc in 8 sts, 2 sc in next) around. Sl st to connect. Fasten off white.

Round 3: with Tangerine, attach in 1st st. sc in each st around. Sl st to connect. Fasten off tangerine.

Round 4: with white, repeat round 2.

Round 5: with Goldenrod, repeat round 3. 142 sts.

Round 6: with white, attach in 1st st, (sc in next 11, 2 sc in next) around. Sl st to connect. Fasten off white. 154 sts.

Round 7: with Grass, attach in 1st st, (sc in 13 sts, Ls into next) around. Sl st to connect. Fasten off Grass. 11 leaves total.

Round 8: with White, attach yarn to 1st st to the left of a leaf. (Sc in next 13 sts, ch 2, sk leaf) around. Sl st to connect. Fasten off white.

Round 9: with Goldenrod, attach yarn to where you fastened off. (Sc in next 13, 2 sc in ch 2 space) around. Sl st to connect. Fasten off goldenrod. 165 sts.

Round 10: with White, attach to where you fastened off. Sc in each around. Fasten off white.

Round 11: with Tangerine, attach to where you fastened off. (Sc in next 14 sts, insert your hook into the tip of the leaf and into the next sc. Complete a sc as usual to take down the end of the leaf) around. Sl st to connect. Fasten off Tangerine.

Round 12: with White, attach to where you fastened off. Rsc around. Fasten off.

Weave in all your ends & you’re done! I hope you have enjoyed this free pattern. Please feel free to comment below with any questions about the pattern.
